Karen is a woman with a disability who lives in Waukesha. While participating in the Community Orienteering Program she was a consumer at various local cafés and restaurants. Karen practiced her wheelchair mobility skills in and out of the buildings. She would order and pay for her items that she chose off the menu, with assistance, as she cannot read. Karen would introduce herself to the wait staff and was very respectful, practicing her social skills.
One day at a café, Karen introduced herself to a couple who had a baby. She complimented them on their baby, telling them how cute she was. They were very friendly back to Karen and asked her if she would like to hold their baby. Karen said yes and they graciously placed their child in Karen’s lap. Karen played with the child and thanked the couple.
You may not think that this is out of the ordinary, but for most of Karen’s life she lived in an institution because our society thought she would be a detriment. For Karen, this was truly a success. She was valued by those in the community because she was a participant.
